The Next Chapter: The Happy Book Mail-Around

One Book Made It!!

Well, this may well be the longest adventure yet! In 2010 the Next Chapter Book Blogging Group tried our first ever mail-around! Together we set out to explore The Happy Book
by Meg Leder and Rachel Kempster, both of whom encouraged us with enthusiasm. (You can hear my interview with these lovely ladies here.) The Happy Book is an interactive delight, full of prompts to share pictures, drawings, poems, memories and reminders of where we find joy. What a perfect book to share.

Interest was so high that I created four mailing circles with participants in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany and the Philippines. With loving care, my friend Danette even followed up on the book, checking to see where it had arrived, ensuring the receiver knew here it was supposed to go next. (See, I've seen quite a few mail-arounds that... um... well, never made the "around" part.) Eventually it became clear that the plan was really ambitious and that life, well, life has its own plans.

But even so, through all the distance, through all of the challenges, through all the things life threw our way...

One book made it home!

Thank you to everyone who added their joy to the adventure, whether it was in this book or in one that is still roaming or whether you joined in for our Friday happy check-ins. It really is true what they say: shared joy is doubled joy. Thank you for all the smiles.

The Mail-Around: Where are they now?

Bliss: Barb Kobe has The Happy Book in Minnesota and will be sending it off to Carmen Torbus in Florida.

Giggle: The Happy Book is in transit to Jennifer Moore. Now, it seems to have been on its way for quite a while, so we're starting to wonder whether it's, well, gone on a different adventure. We'll give it another week.

Mirth: Anna has the book in New York and will be passing it along to Sandra here in Toronto.

Glee: Oh, my, Glee beauties, I'm afraid this is the first of the books to officially go MIA. There have been many attempts from many different angles to see if we could get the book back in motion but to no avail. So, here's what I'm going to do. I am going to send a new book out to Stephanie in North Carolina so that the circle can continue. Let's hope that the O.G. (no, not Original Gangsta but Original Glee) book finds its way back to me. Send good vibes!

Mail-Around Peeps: Thank you to everyone who has sent me an "I'm in" email, especially those people who for some reason didn't get the mailing but know they are on the list. Remember, if you are in the mail-around and want to stay in the mail-around, you must email my by September 7th to confirm your participation.

The Big Shake-Up & A Fresh Start

I've decided to really shake things up here at The Next Chapter: The Happy Book edition and I'm excited about where it's taking us!

As of today, everyone who would like to can join us in playing through The Happy Book by Rachel Kempster and Meg Leder! Every Friday I'll pick a random page in the book and that will provide our focus for the week (Thanks for that great idea, Helen!) Then in true Next Chapter tradition, on Fridays we will share our thoughts and experiences on our blogs, using the Mr. Linky (just as you see below) to add a direct link to your post so that we can all visit one another.

The Big Next Chapter Shake-Up

For Everyone Who Would Like to Play! Everyone is welcome to join us in working through The Happy Book starting today! If you are a new participant (i.e. not in the mail-around), please sign up using the form in the upper left-hand corner. Even though it may take you some time to get the book, in the video I explain what you can do, starting today. (Mail-around folks, you do not have to sign up again. New people, please do)
For the Mail-Around Circles: If you are already signed up for The Happy Book Mail-Around, you should have received an email from me asking that you reconfirm your interest in participating. For reasons explained in the email and video, you must confirm by September 7th in order to stay in the mail-around circle. (I think I say the 3rd in the video but I said the 7th in writing, so the 7th it is!)
For the Mail-Around Circles: The first circle to get their book back to me will win Your Creative Spark. Yep, every single person in the circle!

Happy Book Posting

For this week: If you feel like posting and making a start, feel free to introduce yourself and/or share what's been making you giggle with glee! For the bright sparklers that have been doing just that since January, you can lead the way!

Next Friday: We'll share the results of our first assignment (I give the details in the video). I have been smiling about this one since I opened the book and saw what we were doing. This one is a beauty!

Can I still join?

You are always welcome. You can join at any time.

How much of a commitment is participating?

It's entirely up to you. There is no pressure to participate. You can post once or every week. You can visit a few other blogs, all the other blogs or none. You can write a paragraph or an extended post. Whatever you are called to do is just right.

What's a direct link and how do I post it?

When adding your link to each week's secret, you want to use a direct link. A direct link is the address that takes you directly to the relevant post instead of to your blog generally. For example:

Direct Link (okay to post): http://starshyneproductions.blogspot.com/2009/01/12-secrets-of-highly-creative-secret-1.html.
General Link (don't post) : http://www.starshyneproductions.blogspot.com/

To get that url, click on the title of your post and see the new url that appears when you're looking directly at that post.

Scheduling

There’s no hard and fast rule about when to post. Each Friday I will put up a post and create a space for you to leave a direct link to your post. In my experience, the closer you post to the Friday, the more likely people will come and visit. But remember, everyone has their own rhythm. This is supposed to be fun and inspiring. So find what works for you.

All the links are gone. What's up?

On occasion, Mr. Linky hiccups and for a time the links appear to disappear. It usually only lasts a short while and they are all back, intact and ready for more additions. If this happens, come back a bit later to check the status. If after a few hours it hasn't resolved, feel free to let me know, and I'll contact my hero, Mr. Linky.

Not at all. This is meant to be a joyful adventure, not a chore. Let's drop the pressure on ourselves and each other. When you do have a chance, consider a mix of old friends and new faces so that our community can continue to grow with support and connection.

Why aren't people coming to my blog?

Sometimes it can be a simple, technical thing such as not posting a direct link to your post with Mr Linky. If people come to your site and can't find your Next Chapter post, they'll likely just leave. If that's not it, it can help to visit other people's blogs, find ones you really relate to, and connect through leaving comments. Try not to take it personally. Sometimes, it's just a busy week.

This video absolutely made me giggle with glee! And sometimes, you just need a giggle!

Where We Are & Where We're Going

Our Happy Book Adventure has been on my mind over the past couple of weeks. The pace of the books is slowing down considerably and one book is in fact at a standstill. Danette has been absolutely awesome and instrumental in connecting with people, making sure they have all the information they need, encouraging everyone to keep up the energy and the momentum but at this pace, the books will cross the finish line in 2012... for Christmas 2012!

Now, we have done a powerful job so far. The books have traveled to the UK and Australia, across Canada and the US. There have been cookies and connections and smiles and gifts. We've received so many messages that the books are becoming more beautiful all the time, that people are generously sharing their art and their creations. These are treasures - and the journey we're on is to be treasured too.

So, how do we sustain the energy and pick up the pace? I'm weighing the options and have something in mind, but I'd really love to hear your thoughts. I'll gather everyone's input and give it a think and next week I'll let you know the direction we're headed.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and input, for the joy you share each week and the happiness you spread. You are beautiful and a blessing in my life.

I love these Flash Mobs. Wouldn't it be awesome to dance in one? This one is right in my hometown and I didn't even know about it until this week! There's also been a popular Subway Dance Party here. One of the wonderful things about this journey is how it's taking us through the seasons. I well remember bundling up to put the Happy Books in the mail on January 15th! And today I'm in a tank top and the sun is shining! I love that we're getting to notice what makes us happy and how that shifts and changes through out the year! Now we'll know what fills us with GLEE in the springtime and what brings us BLISS in summer, what makes us GIGGLE in the fall and where we find Mirth in winter! What a joy-full way to experience the year!

And experience the year we will because I have a funny feeling these babies will be back on my doorstep some time in 2011!

Sara of Your Creative Ally added this awesome happy video to our Vimeo group and I just had to share it! You can just feel the joy in the room! There's something about dancing that always invites the happy in! And it just felt so right this week because we just celebrate the 5th Annual Shyne Like a Star Virtual Dance Party too! (Put dancing on May 1st in your calendar for next year) I can't wait to see what made you happy this week.

I also wanted to share a heartfelt book recommendation that came in from Carrie McCarthy. Serendipity led her to the book The Necklace: Thirteen Women and The Experiment That Transformed Their Lives and it drew her in and filled her with happy. I think it's a great idea to get yourself a book and start playing along while our Glee, Mirth, Bliss and Giggle books are on their journey! We started this adventure in on a cold day in January with me bundled up and putting the books in the mail! I have to tell you the Glee group is really keeping the energy alive, keeping the book moving and grooving. Anj is sending it on to adventurer #6 in their group! Let's see if we can keep the momentum high and happiness flowing. And while the books fly, let's keep sharing our happy.

Welcome to the very first day of The Happy Book Mail-Around! This is going to be so much fun!

Blog Your Happy:

Whether or not you're participating in the mail-around portion of the adventure or not, please join us here on Fridays and share your Happy by posting something that made you happy this week. That's what the "Blog Your Happy" Mr. Linky is for. If you don't have a blog or just want to leave a quick note, feel free to leave a happy thought in the comments.

Video Your Happy:

For the first time, I've created a vimeo group where you can share videos of moments that make you happy, maybe your first sip of coffee or the way the sun streams in your window, your cat purring, your street. They can be short and sweet and simple. And who knows, they might just show up here on a Friday! By the way, I hope to be putting up a video shortly of me putting all 4 books in the mail on this cold Toronto morning.

The Mail-Around:

If you are one of the 108 people participating in the mail-around itself, you should have received an email from me with some instructions and also the name and address of the adventure buddy you are sending the book to. If you did not, please check your junk mail folder and make sure I'm on your safe-senders list. If that still doesn't yield results, email me and we'll figure it out.

On the blog roll, you'll see the four circles for the adventure. Feel free to use either the The Next Chapter: The Happy Book badge or the one for your particular group. The names on the blog roll are listed in the order that the book will be traveling.

Some things to think about:

Please check your links. Also check that the person before and after you is who you are expecting to send/receive from. It's great to double-check everything now for smooth sailing ahead. If you don't have a blog, I've indicated that and just linked back here. Be sure to let me know if/when you've started your blog and I'll add the link.
Don't worry about getting it wrong or messing it up. Scratch out words. Risk making a mess. Break the spine. Tape it up again. This is a work in progress. It's about making it happy and sharing, not about making it perfect.
Don't worry about rationing what you're adding. Go for it. It's a big book with lots of pages. If they do happen to get full, we can tape in more pages or add an envelope. There is room for all of your happy!
Don't feel like you have to be guided by what the people before you have done. If someone wrote with pen, you can too or you can use marker or crayons. If someone wrote neatly and small, you can still write big and crazy. This is a celebration of our uniqueness, our own special version of happy. So add your own flavour. It will fit in perfectly.
Let's keep the momentum going. There's going to be travel time as the book journeys between Canada, the US, the UK, Denmark, Germany, Australia and the Philippines! When it arrives at your house, you have one week to play and then send it on to your adventure buddy. Remember, when it gets back to me, there will be prizes!
Let's stay connected. Take some time to get to know your adventure buddies. Go to the blog of the person before you and after you and say hi. You're in this together! You might also want to subscribe to the comments so that you can keep in touch and get updated on where the book is.

Welcome to the first ever The Next Chapter mail around!

What a turn-out! Thanks to your enthusiasm and the generosity of the authors, Meg & Rachel, and their publicist, Carrie, we're going to have 4 Mail-Around Circles - and they are all full! (When I look at the picture I chose for this post, I realize that having 4 circles was meant to be!)

If you didn't make it in, please remember, every Friday, starting January 15 you are welcome to come back here and share what made you happy each week. We'll keep sharing our happiness until the books make it back to me - and then there will be celebrations!

About the Book

The Happy Book is an inspirational activity book designed to gather all the quirky little things that make you happy! It invites you to share the noises that nurture you, the experiences that bring ecstasy, the flavours that fill you up! There's almost 200 pages of prompts and space for you, well, for us, to fill up and share our happiness! You can fill it with words, drawings, doodles, cut-outs, art, sparkles, stickers, whatever you like! We're going to create a book full of happy!

About the Authors

Meg and Rachel are two totally fun and inspiring ladies - and I didn't just say that because they promised to take me on a cupcake tour if I come to New York! In fact, you can hear for yourself in this episode of Creative Living with Jamie. They are really excited to see what happens in the mail-around and to watch what we get up to!

About the Mail-Around

So I thought this time around we'd share the book experience in an entirely different way, sending the book around to one another - think Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants!

When the book arrives at your place, you will have one week to get to know one another, to take in what previous people have added and contribute your own flavour of happiness! Invite friends, family, co-workers, strangers, even your cat to add their own take on happiness and at the end of your week, send it along to the next person on the list. Every time we're ready to move on to the next person, I'll put up a post with a Mr. Linky. Once you've had your turn with the book, you can blog about the experience and link to it here, letting us know when you've handed it over to the Postal Gods to find its way to the next beautiful participant.

Happy Friday Blogging

To keep it fun and lively each week, every Friday I'll put up a post that will serve two purposes:

First, I'll make a note of just where the book is on its journey and provide the opportunity for the current Happy Book Holder to share their experience.
Second, I'll leave a Mr. Linky for anyone and everyone to share something that makes them happy!

This will go on as long as the book is in flight! Now, I know the big challenge is going to be ensuring that the book doesn't get stalled somewhere along the line, that it actually makes it back to home base, so here's the deal...

Participation

In order to keep the momentum going, to have a chance for celebrations and prizes before we hit 2011, the mail-around chain mustn't be too long. So, here's the plan.

With up to 26 people, I will start the mail around with 1 book.
If we have 26-52 people, I will divide the list and send around 2 copies of the book.
If we have 52-78 people, I will divide the list and send around 3 copies of the book.
If we have 78-104 people, I will divide the list and send around 4 copies of the book. (Imagine!)
I will close registration at 104!

In the sign-up form, I ask if you're willing to ship the book internationally. The Next Chapter has participants from all over the world and it's a wonderful way for us to be connected globally. Imagine how excited you'll be to receive something that was just in Australia or South America! Yes, there will be an expense involved - but this time there's no cost for the book itself and there's even a chance to win treats!
